This is a Career Service position at the Cedar Hills Landfill in the Operations Section of King County's Solid Waste Division. This position will be responsible for basic labor duties including supporting the landfill tippers, keeping the work area clean, assuring safe backing up of trucks and following safety procedures. This position will report to the Landfill Supervisor and will be directed by the Operator Lead.

WORK LOCATION: Cedar Hills Landfill, 16645 228th Avenue SE, Maple Valley, WA
WORK SCHEDULE: This position is full-time and is overtime eligible. This position will work a 7/10 schedule (7 days on 10 hours per day, followed by 7 days off (Monday – Sunday) or a 5/8 schedule; 8 hours per day, for five days. This is a day shift position.
OPERATIONS SECTION PROFILE: The operations section of the Solid Waste Division operates a solid waste transfer and disposal system for residents and businesses in King County (except for Seattle). The operations section is responsible for the transfer facilities, transportation, maintenance shop (maintaining the division's heavy equipment, vehicles and facilities), landfill operations, landfill gas and wastewater, commercial garbage collection companies and self-haulers (business and residential) bring solid waste to the transfer facilities, where it is located into large transfer trailers and hauled to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill for disposal. At the landfill, a network of environmental controls ensures the byproducts of the decomposing waste are captured and managed.
EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES:
•Clean, maintain and support the operation of the landfill tipper to ensure loaded trailers are positioned and secured over tippers, trailer doors are opened and resealed correctly, load is dumped correctly and machines are disconnected from tractors
•Ensure trailers are properly disconnected and reconnected to the tractors
•Perform visual safety inspection of truck trailer and landfill tipper before loads are dumped
•Perform litter control on the landfill as needed
•Maintain cleanliness of landfill tipper machines and clean debris from the back of the trailer
•Using hand tools and other equipment, clean and maintain a variety of areas, including surrounding landscape, parking areas and vehicles
•Keep daily work log on computer
•Perform related work as required and assigned
•Ability and skills to work outdoors in a Solid Waste landfill
•Ability to provide the necessary support to operate a landfill tipper machine
•Basic knowledge of safety procedures
•Ability to clean the tipper machine and remove debris from the transfer station trailer
•Ability to use hand tools and equipment to clean surrounding areas, landscape, parking areas and vehicles
•Excellent customer service skills
•Ability to follow procedures and accomplish tasks with direction
•Basic computer skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The candidate must have the ability to work outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, inclement weather while on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain and other adverse conditions such as odor, noise, dust and traffic.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: An offer of employment will be contingent on a successful employment physical examination. A valid Washington State Driver's License is required upon hire.
