The responsibilities of a Transit Maintenance Constructor include performing maintenance plumbing, mechanical repairs, and various types of welding repairs and repair of transit buildings, facilities, structures, and equipment. If you have three or more years of journey-level work experience and/or have completed an apprenticeship, training, or vocational school program in the plumbing, welding, or mechanical fields you should consider Metro as your future employer!
Per the union contract, those hired into this position enter at 90% of the top pay scale. Additionally, shift differential is paid to those working second and third shifts. Shift pay is 5% for second shift and 7.5% for third shift, on top of hourly pay. Current hourly rates are:
- $39.11 - first shift
- $41.07 - second shift
- $42.04 - third shift
About Transit Facilities Division (TFD)TFD provides maintenance and custodial services to Metro's fixed assets, including buildings and transit facilities- such as park and rides, bus stops, radio and electric systems, trolley overhead infrastructure, and the Pier 50 passenger ferry facility.
What do we do an who do we serve?
TFD serves our communities, customers, and fellow Metro employees. The division is comprised of two sections:
- Maintenance and Services provides support for shelter cleaning, landscape, signage, custodial, HVAC and building controls, painting, equipment and building maintenance and plumbing, shelter refurbishment, garbage collection, radio systems, electrical systems, trolley overhead and electric vehicle (battery bus/non-revenue vehicles) charging.
- Service Management provides division-wide support functions for finance, budget, environmental compliance, safety, training, and administrative services. Planning inventory/materials management, work center, workforce management, functional asset management, general/maintenance agreements, systems support, capital infrastructure, sustainable resources/energy, estimating, inter-agency maintenance, Seattle streetcar network, the walk on Water Taxi, Pier 90, and Streetcar Overhead Catenary System oversight.
Job Duties Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work. As the Maintenance Constructor, you will:
- Install, modify, maintain, repair, test and certify components of plumbing and piping systems, backflow prevention assemblies, water and industrial wastewater and related systems.
- Repair, maintain, test, and electronically record the certification of fire prevention/suppression systems, sprinklers and associated fire, life safety and mechanical devices.
- Install and anchor equipment, assemblies, and auxiliary devices to structures in compliance with building and seismic codes and regulations.
- Maintain and service equipment including pumps, pressure washers, gates, shop machinery, grounds-keeping, heavy-duty and related equipment.
- Fabricate and weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals required for the repair, maintenance and construction of facilities, passenger shelters, equipment, and structures.
- Operate and haul heavy-duty equipment including cranes, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, forklifts, snowplows, road sanding and similar equipment.
- Maintain varied records including work performed, time spent, materials used, operating logs and related information; enter and extract data using automated systems; maintain manual records as required.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills- Journey-level knowledge of and skill in the principles, practices, techniques, tools and equipment of the plumbing, pipe, and steam fitting trades.
- Knowledge of oxyacetylene and various types of electric arc welding.
- Knowledge of the repair and installation of industrial water and wastewater systems.
- Knowledge of the installation and repair of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Knowledge of the installation and repair of fire suppression, and sprinkler systems.
- Knowledge of and skill in the operation and repair of heavy-duty and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of varied auxiliary equipment including pumps, pressure-washers and similar equipment.
- Knowledge of standard construction practices, principles and building systems.
- Knowledge of related building and health codes and regulations.
- Knowledge of safe moving and lifting practices, occupational hazards and safety requirements.

Nece ssary Special Requirements: - All applicants must be 21 years old at time of application.
- Work requires reporting for duty during adverse weather events and other emergencies.
- Willingness and availability to work different shifts or weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must pass drug and alcohol testing provision for safety-sensitive positions as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation, 49 CFR Parts 40 and 655.
- A valid Washington State driver license and acceptable driving record.
- A candidate must obtain a Washington State Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) with the Air Brake restriction removed and a Passenger endorsement within 90 days of hire.
- A candidate holding a valid CDL must have the Air Brake restriction removed and a passenger endorsement or pass the Air Brake and Passenger permit tests within 90 days of hire.

- Within six months of hire, a candidate must be able to obtain a Class A CDL with the Air Brake restriction removed and Passenger endorsement. After hire, King County Metro Transit will provide you with on-the-job training, on our equipment, so candidates have the ability to meet this requirement.

Work ScheduleEmployees in this non-exempt classification work a 40 hour per week schedule with two consecutive days off, but not necessarily Saturday and Sunday. Work schedules and locations are based on a seniority system and schedules are bid on two times a year. The Maintenance Constructor is subject to work 24-hour on call periods and responds to emergencies. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift, including any combination of days off, at any location. These positions are FLSA non-exempt and therefore eligible for overtime pay.
Work EnvironmentWork requires the ability to work inside, outside (inclimate weather work is mandatory), at heights, in awkward positions, and in confined spaces. When working inside, there is exposure to high noise level.
Physical RequirementsWork requires the ability to meet peak and prolonged physical effort on a regular basis. The Maintenance Constructor performs heavy work involving a wide range of physical activities associated with inspection, repair and overhaul of equipment and machinery weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting heavier objects.
