Academic Coordinator

 

Elms College located in Chicopee, MA is seeking an Academic Coordinator.  The Academic Coordinator will work with students to provide comprehensive academic support to ensure the retention and successful matriculation of students as they complete their Education degree and work towards passing their Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL).

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The areas of responsibility for the Academic Coordinator include:

 

Cohort/CEUE Program Support:

  • Work with the Executive Director of the Center for Equity in Urban Education to inspire, motivate, and challenge students towards achieving their academic and licensure goals.
  • Serve as academic mentor to students throughout their program.
  • Coordinate outreach and support opportunities, including, but not limited to, digital communications, webinars, etc.
  • Facilitate group activities promoting best practices in test preparation, online learning, and study skills.
  • Conduct individual and group peer tutoring sessions.
  • Support students and advisors during registration process.
  • Assist with student orientations, information sessions, and onboarding process.
  • Coach and inspire students with life or other circumstances to ensure online course attendance.
  • Encourage and support students as they gain the skills and knowledge necessary for success.
  • Provide a trusting environment where students can share their thoughts, aspirations, concerns, and interests.

 

MTEL:  Assessment, Instruction and Outreach:

  • Provide initial diagnostic screening of MTEL tests and benchmark students’ progress.
  • Develop a detailed and comprehensive “success plan” to identify gaps in content knowledge and provide the necessary supports to guide students through each developmental phase successfully.
  • Design and deliver MTEL preparation workshops, face-to-face. As well as in a webinar format.
  • Track progress individually and by licensure group, and maintain up-to-date academic and MTEL data on students.
  • Communicate with all key stakeholders regarding progress of students in MTEL licensure pathway.
  • Flexibility to be available during some scheduled early mornings, early evening or weekend hours to meet with students.

 

Collaboration:

  • Strong collaboration with the Education Division, Center for Student Success, and Experiential Learning.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director of the Center for Equity in Urban Education.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a public, private or nonprofit setting such as: career center, counseling, or coaching services, workforce development partnership, human resources, education and training program.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations in PreK-12 urban settings.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts educator licensure requirements and professional standards for teachers.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Highly Recommended: Has taken or will take the Communication & Literacy test of the MTEL and a subject matter test in a licensure field.
  • Highly Recommended: Content knowledge and teaching experience in language and literacy and/or math.

 

 

  • Proficiency experience in the use of new technologies in the classroom, online and/or hybrid teaching preferred; proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Proficiency experience with online advising platforms and record-keeping.
  • Culturally Responsive: Can work with students from diverse backgrounds and adult learners.
  • Technical Learning: Can learn new skills and knowledge quickly.
  • Decision Making: Makes good decisions bases on a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgement.

  • Planning: Organizational skills to accurately scope out length and difficulty of tasks and projects in order to set objectives and goals. 
  • Informing: Provides the information people need to know to make accurate decisions.
  • Action Oriented: Enjoys working hard, with positive energy, seizing opportunities to accomplish and exceed goals.
  • Perseverance: Pursues everything with energy, drive, and a need to finish, especially in the face of resistance or setbacks. 
  • Customer Focus: Dedicated to student development and success, establishes and maintains effective relationships with students and earns their trust and respect, exceptional counseling, coaching and mentoring skills. 
  • Integrity & Trust: Widely trusted, truthful, admits mistakes, keeps confidences and can present truth in an appropriate and helpful manner.
  • Listening: Can accurately restate the opinions of others, practices attentive and active listening, while exhibiting patience for others.
