APL has an outstanding full time opportunity for an Instrument Maker 3 / CNC Machinist.

The ability to turn ideas and hypotheses into experiments, field programs, and new instrumentation relies on the composite of many science and engineering disciplines. The Laboratory owes its success to the synergy created by investigators and technicians working across these departments and their commitment to basic and applied research.
The appointee to this position will perform complex high precision work on Oceanographic Research Instruments by setting up and operating manual machine tools and/or programming, setting up and operating CNC machine tools such as Okuma lathes, Haas CNC mills, SIP jig borer, Bridgeport manual mill, G&L horizontal boring mill, grinding machines, and Vision Engraver to fabricate parts for research purposes. Resolve highly complex design and manufacturing problems such as performing design work from verbal or minimal written instructions to manufacture mechanical devices; determining tolerances and fits on mechanical designs; performing advanced jig and fixture design and construction; and diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing and rebuilding machine tools and/or mechanical devices.
Under general direction, independently perform highly complex design and project coordination duties in support of part fabrication such as designing complex, state-of-the-art mechanical devices or systems requiring a comprehensive knowledge of system integration involving features such as probes, sensors, gauges or other electro-mechanical devices, plus troubleshooting and repairing mechanical equipment.
-Confer with professors, scientists, and engineers on development of Oceanographic instruments and specialized equipment for research use; recommend design modifications
-Work from SolidWorks solid models, hard copy blueprints, sketches, diagrams, written and oral instructions and suggest design or material changes when alternate configurations appear appropriate
-Create Fanuc style CNC programs using CAMWorks software to facilitate the fabrication of components on Haas 5-axis, 4-axis and 3-axis mills, Revolution mill, and an Okuma CNC lathe
-Plan and lay out work, design jigs and fixtures, determine material and fabrication methods to be used, if not explicitly specified; calculate sizes, apply GD&T to components and determine working tolerances
-Set up and run CNC machine tools and make adjustments as required to maintain appropriate tolerances; Construct or machine parts from standard and exotic metals and alloys, plus plastics, rubber, ceramic, etc.
-Determine and plan all inspection criteria required to prove the repeatable accuracy of high-tolerance components and devices; perform inspections with appropriate gauges and measuring machines
-Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment or machine tools, perform basic repairs, and solve complex mechanical problems;
-Follow the APL Machine Shop electronic file system structure and work with the MS Access tooling storage database
-Perform advanced welding using Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) processes along with heat-treating processes including welding of ferrous and nonferrous alloys and shield metal arc welding techniques, and brazing, soldering and heat treating of a wide variety of metals
-Perform close tolerance sheet metal work
-Perform duties of Instrument Maker II and other related duties as required
Two years of experience as an Instrument Maker II OR equivalent education/experience
Please note: An Instrument Maker II requires at least two years at journey standing as a toolmaker, model builder or developmental machinist
Experience with SolidWorks software and CAMWorks CAM programming software or equivalent
Experience with 4th and 5th Axis programming, setup, and operation
Experience working as a die maker, mold maker or model maker
Additional years of instrument maker experience
