The fields of research for this position is mammalian protein expression, cell signaling assays, immunogenicity and potency assays, and cell line maintenance.

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Washington has contributed to many phases of research. Initially recognized for incisive studies of the structure and function of proteins, and the mechanisms of enzyme action, the department branched out into a multitude of other areas. These included: developmental biology of flies, fish, frogs, and mice; molecular mechanisms of aging in yeast and mammals; vertebrate visual and immune responses; chromosome dynamics, cell division, DNA replication and repair; energy transduction during photosynthesis; protein secretion and membrane fusion; translational control and regulated protein degradation; protein structure determination by crystallography and NMR spectroscopy; and protein structure prediction and enzyme design. About the Institute for Protein Design:

The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington in Seattle is creating a new world of synthetic proteins to address 21st-century challenges in medicine, energy, and technology. The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer,  neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes.

The UW Institute for Protein Design currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 1 whose duties will be to provide experimental support for research projects as part of the IPD Core Mammalian Production team.  The Research Scientist/Engineer will be part of a small team focused on cell signalling and other cell based assays.

Main duties will include maintaining cell lines, stocking necessary reagents, and developing a sufficient project understanding for eventual independent operation. The RS1 MPC will also assist in performing assays to validate the bioactivity of novel proteins designed to modulate signaling in mammalian cells.

Candidate must have familiarity with office productivity software (Word, Powerpoint, Excell) to prepare research reports for on the work performed.   Candidate must be proficient with sterile laboratory maintenance, and familiar with BSL1 requirements.  Candidate will assist graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and research staff with molecular biology, yeast display, protein expression, purification, and biophysical characterization, and using established experimental protocols.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry + 3 months or more years of experience in related field
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture, cell analysis techniques, including western blotting and flow cytometry, is preferred.

  • Previous experience with mammalian protein production is desired
